Cabbage with Mutton Masala Recipe

Ingredients

  • 500g mutton, cut into pieces
  • 1 medium cabbage, shredded
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 inch ginger, minced
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • 1/2 cup yogurt
  • 1/4 cup oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Instructions

  1. Marinate the Mutton:
    • In a large bowl, mix the mutton pieces with yogurt, turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. Let it marinate for at least 1 hour, preferably overnight for better flavor.
  2. Prepare the Masala:
    • Heat the oil in a large pot or pressure cooker over medium heat.
    • Add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, and bay leaf. Let them splutter for a few seconds.
    • Add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
    • Add the minced garlic, ginger, and green chilies. Sauté for a few minutes until fragrant.
    • Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn soft and oil starts to separate from the mixture.
  3. Cook the Mutton:
    • Add the marinated mutton to the pot. Cook on high heat until the mutton is browned on all sides.
    • Reduce the heat to medium, cover the pot, and let it cook for about 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally. If using a pressure cooker, cook for 3-4 whistles.
    • If the mixture becomes too dry, add a little water to prevent burning.
  4. Add the Cabbage:
    • Once the mutton is almost cooked, add the shredded cabbage to the pot.
    • Mix well and cook for another 10-15 minutes until the cabbage is tender and well combined with the mutton and spices.
  5. Final Touches:
    • Sprinkle garam masala powder and adjust salt to taste.
    • Mix well and let it simmer for a few more minutes.
  6. Garnish and Serve:
    • Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
    • Serve hot with steamed rice or Indian bread like roti or naan.
