Cabbage with Mutton Masala Recipe
Ingredients
- 500g mutton, cut into pieces
- 1 medium cabbage, shredded
- 2 onions, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 inch ginger, minced
- 2 green chilies, slit
- 1/2 cup yogurt
- 1/4 cup oil
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1 bay leaf
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- 1 teaspoon garam masala powder
- Salt to taste
- Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
Instructions
- Marinate the Mutton:
- In a large bowl, mix the mutton pieces with yogurt, turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. Let it marinate for at least 1 hour, preferably overnight for better flavor.
- Prepare the Masala:
- Heat the oil in a large pot or pressure cooker over medium heat.
- Add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, and bay leaf. Let them splutter for a few seconds.
- Add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
- Add the minced garlic, ginger, and green chilies. Sauté for a few minutes until fragrant.
- Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn soft and oil starts to separate from the mixture.
- Cook the Mutton:
- Add the marinated mutton to the pot. Cook on high heat until the mutton is browned on all sides.
- Reduce the heat to medium, cover the pot, and let it cook for about 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally. If using a pressure cooker, cook for 3-4 whistles.
- If the mixture becomes too dry, add a little water to prevent burning.
- Add the Cabbage:
- Once the mutton is almost cooked, add the shredded cabbage to the pot.
- Mix well and cook for another 10-15 minutes until the cabbage is tender and well combined with the mutton and spices.
- Final Touches:
- Sprinkle garam masala powder and adjust salt to taste.
- Mix well and let it simmer for a few more minutes.
- Garnish and Serve:
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
- Serve hot with steamed rice or Indian bread like roti or naan.
