Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • ½ cup water (or as needed)

For the Filling:

  • 1 cup cooked rice (preferably basmati or jasmine)
  • 1 cup finely chopped vegetables (cabbage, carrots, capsicum, onions)
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, minced
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons oil

For Frying:

  • Oil for deep frying

For Dipping Sauce (Optional):

  • 2 tablespoons tomato ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon chili sauce
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • ½ teaspoon vinegar

Instructions

1. Prepare the Dough:

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine flour and salt.
  2. Add oil and mix until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
  3. Gradually add water and knead into a smooth, elastic dough. Cover and set aside for 30 minutes.

2. Prepare the Filling:

  1. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Add minced garlic and ginger; sauté until fragrant.
  2. Add chopped vegetables and cook for 3-4 minutes until slightly tender but still crunchy.
  3. Stir in cooked rice, soy sauce, vinegar, black pepper, and salt. Mix well and cook for 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and let the filling cool completely.

3. Assemble the Momos:

  1. Divide the dough into small equal portions and roll each into a thin circle (3-4 inches in diameter).
  2. Place a spoonful of the vegetable and rice filling in the center of each circle.
  3. Fold the edges over the filling and pleat to seal the momo. Repeat for all the dough and filling.

4. Fry the Momos:

  1. Heat oil in a deep frying pan or wok over medium heat.
  2. Fry the momos in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per batch.
  3. Remove and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.

5. Prepare the Dipping Sauce (Optional):

  1. In a small bowl, mix tomato ketchup, chili sauce, soy sauce, and vinegar. Adjust seasoning to taste.

Serving Suggestions:

  • Serve the fried momos hot with the prepared dipping sauce or your favorite chutney.
  • Pair with a side of fresh salad for a complete meal.

Tips for Perfect Fried Momos:

  • Ensure the dough is rolled evenly for consistent cooking.
  • Do not overfill the momos, as this may cause them to burst while frying.
  • For a healthier option, consider steaming or baking the momos before frying lightly for crispness.

Enjoy these crispy, flavorful fried momos with a delightful combination of vegetables and rice!
