Homemade Apricot Jam with Peels and No Sugar: A Healthy Recipe
Homemade Apricot Jam with Peels and No Sugar: A Healthy Recipe
Here’s a recipe to make apricot jam with peels but without sugar at home, using natural sweeteners and retaining the fruit’s nutritional benefits.
Ingredients:
- 1 kg (about 2.2 lbs) fresh apricots (with peels)
- ½ cup honey or maple syrup (optional for sweetness)
- 2 tbsp lemon juice (for acidity and preservation)
- ½ cup water
- Optional: 1 tsp cinnamon or vanilla extract for added flavor
Instructions:
- Prepare the Apricots:
- Wash the apricots thoroughly. Leave the skins on to retain nutrients.
- Cut the apricots in half and remove the pits.
- Cook the Apricots:
- In a large pot, add the apricots, lemon juice, and water.
- Cook the mixture on medium heat until the apricots start to break down, about 10-15 minutes. Stir occasionally.
- Sweeten Naturally:
- If you prefer a sweeter jam, add honey or maple syrup to taste. You can also make it without any added sweeteners if you like the natural tartness of the apricots.
- Simmer and Thicken:
- Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for another 20-30 minutes, stirring often, until it thickens. The peels will break down and become part of the jam. You can mash the apricots with a spoon for a smoother texture or leave chunks for a more rustic jam.
- Add Flavor (Optional):
- If desired, add cinnamon or vanilla extract during the last 5 minutes of cooking to enhance the flavor.
- Test for Doneness:
- To test if the jam is ready, drop a spoonful onto a cold plate. If it thickens and doesn’t run, it’s ready. If it’s too runny, cook for a few more minutes.
- Store the Jam:
- Once the jam has reached the desired consistency, remove it from heat and let it cool slightly.
- Pour the jam into sterilized glass jars, leaving some space at the top. Seal the jars tightly.
- Let the jars cool to room temperature before refrigerating. The jam can last up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator.
Preserving Without Sugar:
- Since this recipe doesn’t contain sugar, which acts as a preservative, it’s important to store the jam in the fridge and use it within a few weeks.
- For longer storage, you can freeze the jam in airtight containers for up to 6 months.
This homemade apricot jam with peels, using no refined sugar, offers a healthy, natural sweetness and a delightful texture!
